ok i know this sounds weird, but it takes down the swelling. if it is swollen put your foot in your toilet and flush a couple times. i know that sounds really gross, but the water is really cold and it should take the swelling down. make sure you ice it too!
maybe these can help too-

From what I understand you would either feel the bone chip. A fracture could run from a mild to severely sharp pain when putting pressure on your foot.
Have you done any activities that might have lead to this injury? Usually fractures and bone chips don't just happen. A sprain is more likely to happen unnoticed.
If you have time before you go to the doctor soak you're ankle in epsom salt and warm water. Believe it or not this will help with sprains.

i had a fracture in the growth plate of my ankle. the nite of the accident that caused it, 1 side of my ankle wuz swollen 2 almost the size of an orange & IT HURT!!! let's just say that even w/ my mom helping me 2 bed, i felt like some1 was amputating my foot w/o numbing meds. so we went 2 the dr & got xrays & the fracture specialist said if 1 side's rlly swollen, & the other side's hurting, then u have a fracture. hope u don't cuz the cast smells rlly bad after not being able 2 wash it 4 like 6 weeks! good luck! =)

Is it swollen or black and blue?? I fractured my foot and barely felt it. But my muscles hurt so bad because of the stress on them to support my body when the bone and other muscles were injured. It could be anything from broken bone to a muscle injury. It all depends on the swelling and where it hurts. Just go see a doctor and let them do x-rays and stuff.

I broke my ankle (both bones). It hurt very, very much. I was in the hospital (also broke both arms and a bunch of ribs, had a head injury as well) and they were giving me Demerol injections as often as possible to keep me from screaming.
If you can move your ankle, and wiggle your toes without hitting the ceiling and screaming a primal scream, you may not have a fracture...it's a good thing you are going to the doc to have it checked out!

Pain, particularly during movement or when pressure is applied to certain locations. It can also be a sprain as a result of stumbling or twisting the ankle or hitting your foot against something hard on the side or front.
How about see the doctor

ok well a cracked bone or fracture would be so painfull you wouldnt walk on it. i know cracked and fractured my wrist and well i couldnt move it and it is most likley just a pulled tendent. i did that as well last year i ripped all three ligaments off my ankel i couldnt really walk on it but could still slightly move it so i am thinking you either pulled them or maybe ripped some of the ankle ligaments.

if its a sharp pain and yu cant even stand on it
then there is probably something wrong with the bone
if its a pain where yu can bear to walk on it but it aches
then it might not be too serious
but idk i could be wrong you could be really tough
its just from my experience of 5 broken bones

You didn't say how you hurt your ankle. If it is recent, then use ice for 24 hours to reduce swelling, then heat.
