It seems like it would be better for all states to vote on same day.

the problem is that these first primaries set the tone.

everyone baa!s and follows suit. they shouldn't reveal who wins in these first primaries because it is that power of suggestion which sets the deck for and against certain candidates.

If all the states had their primaries on the same day, then candidates would only campaign in the large states where they would get more votes. By having some (Vermont and Iowa at least) small states go first, it ensures that candidates at least spend some time in the smaller states. As a California resident, I am not actually opposed to this strategy, as I believe it would be unfair for my state and other large states (such as Texas and NY) to steal all of the candidates' time.

Those answerers above me are pretty much correct. What I can't figure out is why some states hold their primaries AFTER the nominating conventions are over...
