there are these stick things and they have a goldy top,, there is normally 2 near each other, do they do anything?

you can't do anything with those sticks until you get the grappling hook.

after you get the hook, you can move from one area to another by hooking the stick (or chests, trees, etc..)

you can also stand on the stick, to hook things at higher elevations.

also, when two are next to each other, you can draw the hook swing to both (touch one, and then without lifting, you touch the other stick) to string your rope into a tight rope. this can be used to slingshot link, and also to tightrope walk over gaps in the ground

Those stick things are used with the grappling hook. when you get it, you can jump onto them, swing to them, and make a tightrope. Tightropes can also be used as slingshots in certain situations, and are really helpful (especially in saving time in the ocean king temple, for some shortcuts).
