6 Years ago I had my first baby. About 4 weeks after having him I had an anxiety attack. Here I am 6 years later still with the anxiety attacks. Will they ever go away?? I am not on any meds right now because I breast feed my youngest child. But I am just wondering if it is like a on off switch. One day I have anxiety, and one day it is gone for good. (You know, the way it came). Has anybody else experienced this type of anxiety for years after having a baby?? I am tired of dealing with it, and needs some answers. Please help....

absolutely. I had my daughter 3 years ago and have anxiety and panic attacks. I can't take meds because I am that small percentage that gets suicidal. I have been with a therapist for the last 2 years and that has helped tremendously. The one thing I would recommend to you is to think positive. It sounds silly and small but that is the thing that has really done wonders for me. Every time I catch myself having a negative thought, I immediately change it to a positive one. Since I have been doing this (The past 3 months) I have been happier and my anxiety has gone down by about 90 percent. I also have had no panic attacks. Good luck!

It probably has nothing to do with the baby, it probably has more to do with your age. Normally women with have anxiety/panic attacks have them onset around their mid to late 20s. I personally suffer from them and they started for me when I was almost 24.

As far as if they go away, the answer is no. My grandmother also has them (p.s. they are hereditary) and she still needs medication for them at the age of 81. Depending on the frequency pf your attacks, you may just need an as-needed med, like Xanax that you can just take to calm you down. If they are more frequent, you may need a daily med like Lexapro. Either way, you do need to stop breastfeeding before you can take either.

The bottom line is that it is not normal to have frequent anxiety attacks under any circumstances regardless of the reason for onset. I would consider calling your doc to get a recommendation to speak to a specialist. These things are beyond your control, and you need to speak to someone who knows what to do.

I had a little experience with it, but you should definately tell your doctor because I am sure it is normal and they should definately have some good answers for you. My guess however is that if you've been having them for 6 years, they probably will not go away any time soon.

Besides meds you can also get counseling to get at the root causes of your anxiety, and that will help you a lot.
