They are almost identical, both will go over 180 mph and do a 1/4 mile in about 10 seconds. They both come in a couple different colors and look gorgeous. I'd be happy with either as both are great bikes. However, Yamaha hasn't won a title on an R1, while the GSXR1000 has won 7 of the last 8 titles. Either of these bikes will quickly kill a newbie such as yourself, so for your health please stay away and start with a Ninja 500 or SV650 instead.

Both bikes performance are nearly identical, the R1 has a really low bottom end but it compensates for it with an extreme top end, the new GSXR1000 is very balanced and it also has a special mechanism that allows you to put the bike into 3 different modes, so you can have a 600, 750 and 1000 all in one bike in a way. Those are the only performance differences, very little. In the right hands either of the bikes will do magic, its all about rider's skill, as far as looks go, thats pretty much everybody's own opinion, but for me I love the way both bikes look, but I kinda like the R1's looks a hair better.

usually kawasaki and suzuki are your top power runners, but they are all pretty close. i personally thing the gsxr has better handling then the r1 and if this would be your first bike it is not a good idea
