Presiding over a rapidly dividing Nation, Buchanan grasped inadequately the political realities of the time. Relying on constitutional doctrines to close the widening rift over slavery, he failed to understand that the North would not accept constitutional arguments which favored the South. Nor could he realize how sectionalism had realigned political parties: the Democrats split; the Whigs were destroyed, giving rise to the Republicans.
Born into a well-to-do Pennsylvania family in 1791, Buchanan, a graduate of Dickinson College, was gifted as a debater and learned in the law.

I can't believe you people picked poor Jimmy Carter over RICHARD M. NIXON!!!!!!! Carter wasn't impeached or ran out of office... NIXON WAS.... Carter didn't resign in disgrace---NIXON DID..... Carter's only real problem during his administration was the American hostages being held in Iran... Geez BUSH 2 got us into this UNJUSTIFIED WAR, BUSH 1 went after Sadam for the OIL, Nixon's ONLY good accomplishment was his diplomacy with China... but he LIED to all Americans (like Bush 2 has done), was a terriblly corrupt president... if all you can say about Carter is that he wasn't a STRONG leader, that sure doesn't make him the WORSE president........maybe it made him an OVERLY cautious president, but at least most of our your men and women were not over in some country fighting a WAR we had no business being in LIKE OUR CURRENT PRESIDENT HAS US IN....

Some one kept asking this last night. I guess you people think that the more you say it, the more true it gets, but the question is flawed from the start in that every single president has been both the best and the worst, just depending on the perspectives of both sides of any issue.

This is a question from an obvious dissenter.
We have your ISP address...
We know where you live...
We are coming to liberate you--to a secret prison in a country that allows us to torture.
Do you prefer water-boarding, electrocution, mock execution, or to watch one of your family members get raped in front of you? Just kidding... you don't get to choose--that's up to The Decider.
Does that answer your question?

Right now, that (dis) honor has to go to Jimmie Carter.
He was a man of honor, no one could accuse of him being corrupt. He was an outstanding diploma ( Camp David agreement) but he simply was not a strong leader. He simply was the wrong man for the job.
