It's for a couple of reasons:
It's tradition in American culture.
To distinguish between one Katie Smith and another.
Because the parents can't decide between James and Kenneth.
Because the middle name can be used to honor loved ones.
To give the child a choice in names in case they truly hate their first name.

My family deeply chrishes their culture and past. And because of this I have various middle names. I don't like the idea of giving someone a middle name just because they like the way it sounds or they can't decide between two different names (although that's why most people give kids middle names in the first place). In my family all of our middle names are the names of our family (such as in my case all of the women's maiden names for the past few generations). I agree with the poster who said that middle names can be used for identification, which is how they (and last names)originated I think. I never use my middle names (i have 7), but I do feel that it gives me some kind of connection to my family's past. That's what I think a middle name should be about--a connection with your past, not because it "sounded nice". But, that's just my opinion. Have a great day

So, you can go a couple of ways with the middle name thing.
A) chance to honor a relative that has a not so great name...... like Ethel or Fred is okay if its the child's middle name.
B) a chance to show off a little of your personality as parents.... child's first name is "normal" but the middle name reflects your shared passion or interests .......like Delynnn for the Babylon5 character or Doolin for the little town in Ireland where you believe your son was conceived.

Sometimes it will help with identification. A friend of mine had a background check for a job. Her first and last name and age were the same as another person and at first the report came back that she was in trouble with the law. The middle name helped identify her from the other person. It was good for her to have a middle name in this situation.

You dont know that they will rarely use it, as a matter of fact a lot of kids are using their middle names b/c they hate their first names. Besides its a lot easier with a middle name b/c your kids know that when you yell out their first, middle and last name they are really in trouble! I'm always goin MALACHI LeRoy and JORDYN Allen lol. They know mom means business then!

It gives the child another choice of name when they get older if they decide that they really dislike their first name. It is also a nice way to honor a family member or friend who means a lot to you. Also some parents like the idea of them getting to choose a name each, as this is a good way for them to avoid having too many arguments. lol :-)

If the child goes professional or high in their profession, it will sound more professinal and business like. It will really help if your name is like "Katie, Tessa, Megan, Sadie, Jadie, Amy, Alyssa or Ella" Those names are little girly and won't sound good at Harvard! Now if your name is Alyssa Katherine Smith or something like that, it'll sound more grown up!

Well, my husband has 3 middle names. His full name is Darrell Michael Joseph Waylon Edwards. Depending on who he's talking to, he goes by Joe (what I call him), JoJo, Darrell, Mikey, or DJ. So I guess maybe some parents like the middle names to give "options" to a name. Also, I think having a middle name makes it flow more than just having a first and last name.

My daughter's middle name honors my mom that passed away (Sierra Jane) and my son's middle name honors a friend that his father lost contact with many years ago(Harley Rhett). I use their middle names along with their first names all the time. I even use my daughter's middle name with her nickname(Sissy Jane).
