They'll be around as long as they can make money for the networks. And As long as ratings are decent, they'll survive. I hope they are too!

I think they will be around in some form or another forever. People as a whole love drama and that's exactly what soap operas are.

I really don't think so. Not unless there's a huge overhaul in the writing, management and marketing of the soaps. They need to go back to their roots -- particularly ABC soaps, since the only one I'm really familiar with is GH (though from what I've read they all suffer from this problem). They've forgotten how to tell long-term storylines involving multiple generations of friends and families, and that is what sets soaps apart from every other genre. Once they lost that, they became completely pointless and that's why ratings are tanking so badly.

As long as there are house wives, gay men, and women dreaming of a life without worry.....there will be soaps. Its the ultimate fantasy world.

Oh I'm sure they will. I think there will always be an audience for that stuff. It has it's highs and lows, but it always get popular sooner or later. They're a lil slump right now, just give it time...

I am pretty sure it will outlive cochroaches. It does seem that each year the story lines get longer and more drawn out. I hope they aren't running out of ideas and buying time.
