I have had my goldfish for 3 weeks or so and have been feeding it the same type of food, HBH Goldfish Bites pelleted food (he is a moor and sinking pellets are all I want to feed him). I feed him 3x every single day the same food, I just now found out that HBH has recalled it's Goldfish bites because it contains melamine. It does not say the date the contaminated food was made. how long should it be before I would have seen him getting ill if the food I have is contaminated? If it could take a while I want to dispose of the food, but if the food is safe (ie, he should have died by now if it really was contaminated) I don't want to throw away good food. How long would it take for symptoms to show up if I feed him 6-7 pellets 3x daily every single day?

Oh, lol... I know, HBH isn't my normal brand, I usually only buy Tetra, it's just at the petstore I bought Hitomi (the goldfish) from, the only options were flakes or HBH pellets, and I prefer pellets for my goldfish. I don't know how often the company updates their site, but the recall is still posted there

The can has a shaker top, so I never touch the food anyway... I am more scared for him, I can wash my hands and I keep the food in a cabinet away from other pets, but he has to EAT it. Luckily I have flake food from some old commons I had that outgrew their tank so I gave them to my uncle, I am okay feeding them flakes, they can see it very well and can eat it before it get's sucked up, but hitomi can't see that well because of where his eyes are bigged out so much, he can barely see the pellet's falling straight down in the same spot every single time.

If your fish isn't showing any symptoms he is probably okay. The effects of melamine on animals is not entirely known so it's hard to say if or when he will start showing any symptoms.

To be safe I would stop using the food immediately, and not only for health of the fish. A small child or another pet could get into it and become sick. Also, I would not want to touch any food that may be contaminated with poison.

The had a recall on the HBH food about 2 months ago. I wonder if this is a new recall. Anyway. If in doubt throw it away. Use yahoo to search for any contact information and email them. Another suggestion is use New life Spectrum foods for goldfish its a much better food.

I certainly have owned goldfish and koi for years and that i assure they're going to survive. they are in a place to flow 2 weeks with none food, meaning no scavenging in any respect. And longer in the event that they scavenge. lots of the time while fish die human beings think of this is by means of the fact they stopped eating and starved, while in actuality they have been in simple terms ill. For some reason human beings forget approximately that fish could have in simple terms as many ailments as people.
