She would like to make a kid business out of it - maybe for charity. Any ideas how to make a success of the handmade soap business on a shoestring?

Let's just remember that this type of endeavor involves everyone in the family. It's a time and commitment issue. Until she can drive herself and commit her own time, it affects everyone. Have her give the soap as gifts and be happy with that.

Hi,

I just wanted to add that if she is selling her soaps, she will need to have insurance. This is extremely important! If someone has an allergic reaction to one of the oils or butters in the soap, you as her parent would be liable. That could be very costly since some people are very eager to hire an attorney. Just be sure to research everything thoroughly before you jump in. Most people I know have been making soaps quite some time before selling. Gifting is a wonderful idea. Time will only tell what happens from that point. She may be then next super soaper! :)

Sure! Here we have a local Saturday Market and kids that run booth's get dirt cheap rates....I think it is something like $5 a table. Also, our local Internet company has a classified ads list where you can post free classifieds. People post stuff for sale there all the time. Right before Christmas, I bought some soap from Gorge.net in the classifieds section.

How about fliers at the local schools, community bulletin boards, senior center, community colleges?

Have her talk with your local community college. They usually have a Small Business Development Center where someone can help her get started.

Hope this helps! Congratulations on your entrepreneur!

Hi, is your daugther making cold process soap using lye or is she doing melt and pour? I can give better suggestions once I know this. I sell my soaps, and think a child selling soaps would be too awesome. :)Tam

It can be lucrative, but she has to come up with an original recipe because you can't sell someone else's formula. I'd rather buy something homemade from a child than the overpriced catalog stuff they're always bugging us to buy.
