I know there is some sort of program, but I recently bought a MacBook and I have had a wireless router and I'm figuring out i don't need a password to get on it. I think you need wireless network security to get a password right? What would be some good software options that are not expensive or better yet free? Please and thank you

there are several common ways to secure a wireless network

1 - WEP (Wireless Encryption protocol) - a simple method of securing a wireless network via a passphrase or password. This is not recommended as it is not very secure.

2 - WPA/WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access) - a more secure version of WEP (with a longer passphrase) that is more secure as there is more (and stronger) encryption used within the standard

3 - MAC Address Filtering - All network devices have a unique ID that the router can use to allow or deny access to the network (similar to the way a bouncer on a nightclub door controls access to the club via a "Guest List"). This provides the best network performance but requires a fair amount of technical knowledge to setup and maintain. This is also a high-maintenance method of security as any new wireless devices (such as games consoles) will have to be added to the list manually.

Most routers on the market provide these three methods to secure your network.

The best thing to do is to refer to the handbook that came with your wireless router on how to configure the security for your wireless. Normally you can access the router by typing it's local network address into a web browser - more often than not it will be configured to either http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.2.1

you need to be able to get to your router's setup page and turn on security from that page. You would type in your code, then on your Macbook type in the same code and encryption. See the wireless networking forum at dslreports.com for detailed instructions on how to set up your security. Read the FAQS and tutorials.

Please refer to http://www.infosec.gov.hk/engtext/itpro/sectips/wireless.htm

Since WEP is totally outdated, you should check on the manual of your Wi-Fi modem for the highest secruity which basicall a combination of WPA and EAP.

You also need to set your Mac firewall to blocking all.
