So I am a US citizen that often gets checks in pounds sterling. Is there any way to avoid the hefty fees?

Yes.. either set up an account with a British bank and do wire transfers, or deposit them in an American bank and WAIT a while until the funds clear...

You should be able to set up an account with one of the major UK banks such as HSBC or Royal Bank of Scotland. They can offer a UK Pound account and a US dollar account which are linked allowing you to move money between the two electronically. By depositing the checks into your UK pound account and then moving the funds to your US Dollar account you should be able to avoid the fees you are currently being charged.
