ok, I have a couple of questions, what is the average amount of money you pay a talent agent, and it says that you should have an 8 by 10 picture. How do you know what picture to choose, do they just want your face, or your whole body? I need some serious help, and if I need to know anything else, please let me know. Thanks so much!!!

In all honesty it doesn't sound like you are ready for an agent. If you've been in classes like you should be and if you've been building a resume through theatre, student & indie films then you would have gathered this information already. You don't pay an agent. They earn a commission of 10% when they help you find work. They find you auditions and when you book the job they negotiate your contracts and take their 10%. As for what photo to use, you need to go to a professional photographer who knows what actor headshots are. It's a headshot. Your head and shoulders basically.

Really and truly what you should do is get into class. Do not send anything to an agent until you've done what I mentioned already. It would just be a waste of time and money. While in class, network with others and gather information that is pertinent to your area. What classes are good, what agents are reputable, etc. You can also see which agents are SAG franchised which means they've signed an agreement with the Union to put the talent first. http://www.sag.org/sagWebApp/application?origin=page1.jsp&event=bea.portal.framework.internal.refresh&pageid=AgentInformation

You do not ever call or walk in to the offices of these agents or you could be blacklisted and they will never take you.

You need to find classe sin your area, get involved in theatre, maybe do some extra work to find out what it's like on a set. To do that search for your state name and the word film then thoroughly search the sites that come up. Your state's film commissions, societies, etc. are likely to have good local info on auditions, classes, etc. If you can't find it email and ask.

Keep your grades up and make sure your parents support your decision to do this because without them this is just a pipe dream. The better a child you are to them the more likely they are to be supportive of something like this.

It doesn't sound like you're in Los Angeles, but this site may lead you to a lot of good info just the same. At least you wil have some idea as to all the different categories of things there are to know about and look at. You can also look at photographers' sites and see examples of headshots. http://workingactors.com/ Just explore it.

good luck,
Marianne

Just piling on here. An agent gets paid by taking a percentage of your earnings; licensed agents (the only ones you should be using) take 10%. And by the way, they don't advertise.

Any agent who asks for money up front is a scam.

If you're just starting out to look for an agent, get your headshots done by a reputable photographer. It will cost, but they will know what the industry is looking for.

The basic look is your face and shoulders; however, the 3/4 body look is also pretty standard in LA. And they want color.

an agent does not get you jobs, handiest interviews, it is as much as you and your proficiency and coaching to get a task. an agent in MN isn't going to aid you while the entire paintings and interviews are in L A. do you will have the cash to fly to L A each different day for an interview? an agent in MN is not going to aid you as there is not any paintings there. you must be in which the stuff is finished and feature a regional agent to get anyplace.

A licensed talent agency is restricted to 10% of the gross income they generate for you in employment.

An unlicensed talent manager charges 15-20% but they generally do more, including promotion work. It is, however, illegal for them to find work for people.
