I mean, if a tornado can shake/tip over/pick up a truck or something...... how is someone who weighs just over 100 pounds - going to be safer?

And what if there are no ditches?

It would pick me up in a second. Whereas a car may just shake a little?!

And what if there are no ditches?

I have been through three tornadoes. I have seen what even a small one can do to a car. Your best bet is to try to find a ditch or low spot to take cover and make yourself as low to the ground as possible. The last tornado I saw put a car upside down on the roof of a house. This was a small tornado also. Get underground or inside a strong building in a room with all interior walls. If nothing else a bath tub will do.

My uncle drives a semi and he was picked up by a tornado, cab, trailer and all and deposited 50 feet away on the other side of the expressway. There have been cars picked up and placed on top of houses.

A car is NOT safe, better to get out of the car and find a ditch or other depression in the ground and cover your head with your hands. If you can't find a ditch find a slope or any ground lower than the ground the tornado is moving over. Tornados do not drop down that quickly so it could pass right over you. Of course, any place outside is bad but far better than a car.

Good question!

The reason it's dangerous to be in a car during a tornado is becuse the strong winds can pick up your car and cause it to violently crash down to the ground, causing a risk of serious injury or death. You're right that if you're out in the open you should lie in a ditch. If there are sturdy bulidings nearby-not a mobile home or shack!-, then go to the basement or lowest level of one of those away from windows. If you're right out in the middle of nowhere and there are no ditches, then lie face down flat on the ground, covering your head with your hands. Don't lie near power lines or trees. And by the way, a highway underpass is not a safe place to seek shelter!

I was also in a tornado and that's nothing you want to eff around with. A tornado can pick up a vehicle and throw it, and with wind speeds so high it can carry it for miles. You are better off in a ditch because you want to be on the lowest level wherever you are. you are also less likely to hit by debris when low to the ground, which is the biggest danger of a tornado.

kudos to the dude who went through three of them. i hope to never see one again...
