Limewire is illegal, and they say that the only way you can get into trouble is if some person comes to your house to repair your computer or something, and they find out that you have limewire installed.
but if you uninstall limewire and delete everything before they come to look at your computer, could you still get in trouble?

Sorry. I didn't mean limewire itself was illegal, I meant that downloading songs using limewire was illegal.

First off - Limewire is NOT illegal...
It's all the bootleg MP3's that you're downloading that are ILLEGAL - and it is VERY easy for someone to recover data from your hard drive (unless it has been THOROUGHLY wiped clean) ;);););)

Limewire itself is not illegal. Its a file sharing program and if youre caught sharing copyrighted files then yes you can get in trouble that way. Limewire itself is not evidence that you are doing anything illegal. I've used limewire to send documents and audio files (i do write some music and record it) and send them to friends or professors to listen and read, there is nothing illegal about that. If you share professional music you didnt pay for then it is illegal. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

What makes you think limewire is illegal? It's just one of many peer to peer programs available.
Of course, if you use it to send or receive things that are copyright protected, that would be illegal.
LimeWire is a free and open source Gnutella peer-to-peer network client released under the GNU General Public License. The program allows users to share files using the Gnutella peer-to-peer protocol. It was the first file sharing program to support firewall-to-firewall file transfers, a feature introduced in version 4.2, which was released in November 2004.

They can trace what you download from your IP, it doesn't matter if someone comes to repair your computer or not. If you've got everything deleted(permanently, so it cannot be recovered at all) you could always use the defense that you never did it and maybe someone was stealing your wireless internet connection, but I don't know how well that'd fly. Then again if they can't prove anything, you should be okay. But who cares, MPAA and RIAA are lame and make billions upon billions of dollars a year and need to stop whining.

TPTB track you through your ip address. It links back to your ISP and your ISP can give you up. No one has to come to your house to catch you. You could use several proxies to hide your actions and still get traced. The govt finds people, even smart ones, if they wish.
If you're an average user, you have an ISP and they will give you up, if the authorities press them. Your ISP has records of your usage, even if you format your drive of incriminating evidence. Even small companies log their users for bandwdith usage.
If you've done anything on the Internet, someone has a record.

Sounds like a bunch of crap, really. I mean, what kind of regular person, who happens to fix computers, really cares if you use shareware, or not? What would they get out of turning you in to the imaginary department of shareware defense? I would not worry about it. I also know that you cannot get into trouble for downloading, just sharing what you have with others. Like that warning on all movies and rentals, if you copy it, and share it, then that is wrong. But, it is okay to borrow and download. Weird, huh?

How they catch you is when you download music they can get you ip address from your computer and from that they can get you address and send you a lawsuit in the mail which could cost you thousands of dollars in fines You will be just better off paying for your music, Hope this helps

Yes. They can see what you have on your computer regardless of who's at your house. They can see whatever they want just because you are online, and that gives them access, according to the FCC> What they look at is the music files themselves, to see if you have the copywright license to own that music. They will want proof too.
If you get rid of the music, you wotn have any problems.
