Okay, first, its the Texas Chainsaw 'Massacre', and yes it was gory, but the new one, not the old version which was plain shitty!
Next, The best scary movie would have to be 'Saw'... It was a thriller horror, and believe me you won't sleep alone after watching it!
If you like you can also see 'The Butterfly Effect', a very
brilliant movie...
Scream Triology was also good, but to be honest, it doesn't send any chill down your spine, and that's what we watch horror movies for now dont we? But the suspense is great in them...

A really scary, edge of your seat movie would be something intense like Hostel. I also liked The Ring.

Halloween is a classic, one of my favorites.
Cannibal holocaust or the descent are good ones to watch alone if you like scary movies.
