The only REAL difference is the operating system. Today's PCs have Microsoft's Windows Vista or XP operating system. Macs have a totally new operating system called OS X. OSX and Windows is technically different but they can pretty much do anything such as photo editing, games, and more. The majority of the world uses a PC, therefore nearly all hardware/ computer parts are designed specifically for PCs.
The main advantage of macs is that have a different operating system and make about 7% of the world's computers. This gives an advantage to macs because most of the viruses/ trojans target PCs alone. Hackers go for PCs, not macs because most people today uses a PC. Mac viruses do exist, but they are not common as windows viruses. I really don't know if its easier to use because I never owned one.
The only reason why macs are expensive is because they have NO other competitors, and they can set prices however they want.
Well, we all have different opinions about PC vs Mac. I cannot tell which one is better due to the fact that I never owned one.

short answer: Macs are usually pretty fast because they come with top of the line hardware. At the same time however, you could definitely get a much faster and more powerful PC for the same price. With macs, you pay for the design, while with pcs the prices are much better and more accurate with what they contain long answer: speed is relative, a mac is not faster than a pc or vise versa, it depends on the model and specifications. When it comes to computers there are almost infinite amounts of variables that effect a computers design and performance, but the main things are as follows: processor: usually intel, the number of processors (quad, duo, single), the l2 cache and the speed (usually between 1.2ghz(bad) and 2.8-3.5 (GOOD)) determine how good a processor is. (this is really important) ram: often overlooked, this is the temporary memory available for the processor to use. It is crucial to speed, and easily upgradable. 512mb-1gb of ram is pretty slow 2gb is decent 4gb is good and 8gb is plenty. Hard drive: pretty simple here, the bigger it is, the more you can fit on it. 80gb is cutting it close, 200 is decent, and enough for most people, 500gb is plenty. graphics card: this is completely irrelevent unless you play games. If you dont play games, and you dont do anything like 3d modeling, then dont worry about this, otherwise, the better the graphics card is, the better you games will look, and the smoother they will play BOOm look at that, i over answered your question

Let's see, a MAC has maybe 5 to 7% of the market, a PC has about 90%. Why buy a MAC?

The difference today is basically portability.
It used to be also hardware but Apple sold its soul and now lets Intel (which is a PC manufacturer) make the processors.
Back to the portability thing, MAC will beat the !@#$ out of a PC (only if running Windows) because the core components of a MAC (Kernel) are set with specific hardware information during OS installation.
When the MAC OS installation takes place, the database for hardware specs for example that is on your installation software, is compared during setup and only creates a database on your system with the specific hardware your computer's got. Unlike windows that installs the whole thing leading this to the famous blue screens of death.
You can also notice this on boot time, as you could see that a mac loads only the definitions and databases for the hardware, and loads up faster only with what your computer particularly got. Windows will take a bit more because has to load up on boot time the whole database and hardware definitions.
In other words, nowadays PCs and macs are pretty much the same regarding hardware. The difference is pretty much seen in which OS you use. I prefer PC's because are way cheaper but for OS I am a Linux user or UNIX (depending my mood).

They have different operating systems.
PCs are 2x cheaper.
I buy PCs because my wallet is not overflowing with cash and I can upgrade PCs easily.
I never encountered any incompatibility with PC, never got a BSOD, no viruses, and I find windows easier to use.

Macs have a very solid reputation of being high quality and built strong. For the advanced user Macs are a good option. This is just to add on to what everyone else has said though.
Because of my wallet I chose PC, but I still have a spot in my heart for OS X

They speak different languages!
Software is usually not interchangeable.
PCs are used more in the business world and Macs more in the graphics, design and arts world.
The new Intel Macs can now run Windows as an emulation.
Macs have few, if any, viruses.
Macs usually cost more because NOBODY makes a Mac or its operating system but Apple.
Go to the Apple site and check it out.

Macs are designed by Apple, OS X is written by Apple and runs on Unix and provide the user with a decent experience
Windows is written by Microsoft which took 5 years to come up with Vista, PCs are built by 3rd party manufacturers.
BOTH operating systems are proprietary, only Linux is open source.

There is more better quality software for Macs than PC users know about.
Regarding the price "difference" between Macs and PCs - The sum of the whole package of a Mac is of greater user value than the sum of the parts of a PC.
Macs also run Windows.
