theres no such thing as poverty in the uk, we have a benefits system. any poverty in the uk is self imposed. or illegally imposed on children through neglectful parents or to some extent imposed by mental illness. such poverty should be temporary and there are social institutions set up to protect the weak.

Maid in Cornwall, thanks for you long sobbing diatribe about how to KEEP YOURSELF IN POVERTY by making some poor decisions about work and housing. If you are so far away from work or shops why not RELOCATE? at least until you can AFFORD to live where you choose. If you are homeless, you are still entitled to claim benefits and use that to rent private accommodation until the council can offer housing. you are perpetuating a myth that cry babies use to justify their CHOSEN lifestyle. You quite clearly do not know what you are talking about but are still willing to talk at length about it.

Robert Abuse,
Rural poverty? you mean people still wishing to live in an area that they CAN'T AFFORD to live, refusing to relocate to somewhere that suits their budget, until they can afford to live where they choose... yes, i think thats what you meant, but rural poverty sounds a bit rich, ironically.

People like you CAUSE poverty because you perpetuate the myth and allow people to go on living in the woe-is-me mindset that stops them from looking for the path to accessing the help they need. No wonder there are people who believe they have to live in poverty in the uk, everyone here seems to think that benefits will not cover the cost of housing (which it will) and food and amenities (which it will, just) you are entitled to benefits homeless or not.

I will tell the homeless couple living in the bus shelter in the next village from me that then, shall I? They are not alchies, or drug abusers, just victims of circumstance. They cannot claim benefits, as they have no home, so no address, and they cannot get a home because they have no money, and the council houses are all allocated to the immigrants.

I don't know what planet you live on, but believe me there is plenty poverty down here in Cornwall, I've been a victim of it in the past.

Picture this?? You live in a tiny village, 5 miles from the nearest town. You have no transport, and public transport amounts to 2 buses a WEEK.You cannot afford a car, and you cannot get a job without one. It costs you £14-00 to travel to the job centre, and once you get your benefits, you have to put away the next £14-00, to sign on next time. You have to do your grocery shop in the ONE small village shop, paying £1-40p for a loaf of bread, and 49p for a tin of beans, imagine how long your benefits last? Then you have only a single coal fire to heat your home,( many people living in tiny villages do not have the luxury of gas, and central heating ) and a bag of coal costs £5-70, and lasts 2 days, if you only light it at night. If it's extremely cold, and you have to light the fire during the day, that bag of coal lasts a day.by day 3, you have spent a fortnights benefit's, and thats without paying bills, buying clothes, and electric. I have been there and done that, and have even forraged for wild cabbage along the coastal path to feed my kids, and picked wild mushrooms in the woods.

I am one of the lucky ones. I pulled us out of POVERTY by cleaning peoples ovens, toilets, and taking in ironing, standing ironing quilt sets for holiday homes, 30 sets a night, till 4-am, and was paid £2-00, a set. My husband walked 7 miles, every morning, in rain, hail, and snow, for to get to a job that paid basic wage ( Most people in Cornwall are still on basic wage ) There are STILL many people in Cornwall in that situation, and you have the ignorance, and ordacity to say there is no poverty in the U.K.

Yes, poor people DO get benefits, but if they have no means of transport, to buy food, and neccecities cheaply, benefits are as good as useless, and the government do NOT take into account where you live, or lack of public transport, those people do not get extra benefits for travelling expenses you know?If you STILL think poverty doesn't exist, try living in a very rural village, without a car, or access to public transport, and see how long YOU can live on a fortnights benefits, shopping in a village shop, where prices are geared at holidaymakers. I bet you couldn't.

Sean, unfortunately there is poverty worldwide, more so in some places than in others.
From what the other posters have written, you're either living in a fantasy world or you're delusional!
