Just like Michael Moore said in Bowling for Columbine/Sicko

Commercial media's main task is to draw a crowd so they can sell you something. If that involves scaring people, so be it. If it involves gathering that crowd through the use of a provocative headline, without any validation of that headline being found in the body of the story, so be it. And if you fall for this tactic (and it appears many do) then the commercial end of the enterprise continues on its merry way. It's called making money.
It's the chief reason I relied on short wave radio as my chief source of news and information for over forty years. Lately I've used the internet to listen to "web streaming" of those stations. And not one of them tries to sell me anything.

Michael Moore never said that. The media exists to make money. So they print the news that sells. Sometimes governments and politicians feed news to the media to keep us afraid (yellow alert, orange alert, etc.). But I don-t think the media is responsible for that. They do know if they have attention grabbing headlines we will buy their papers, and bad news is what grabs most attention.

Start listening to Jello Biafra's spoken word albums. He goes on at length about media being controlled by a few hands.
