i always hear those words on shows involving cops

Put simply homicide is Scott Peterson killing his wife. Genocide is Hilter killing the Jews and what the people of Darfur are suffering.

Homicide is a death caused by other than natural causes. Usually a murder but can be from depraved indifference or criminal neglect.
Genocide is an attempt to wipe out an entire group of people based on religious or political or other classification that lumps them together. Such as the Nazi's committed genocide on the Jews.

Homicide is something that results in the death of a human being. Homo Sapien = man.
Genocide is the attempt to wipe out an entire race.

Homicide CAN be unintentional of deliberate. Genocide is, by definition, a deliberate act.

Homicide is when one person kills (murders) another person
Genocide is when an entire nationality, political, or cultural race of people are killed (like with the Nazi's and the Jewish people during WWII or the racial murders in parts of Africa today)
