You can send him on a scavenger hunt around the city. Wrap the first clue in a small box. Arrange it so that the next clue is hidden (like in a library book and the 1st clue points to that particular book) - like Dicken's Tale of Two Cities.

The next clue will point to another clue and then they will ultimately lead him back to your place for his gifts.
