Yes, I spent many years in AA and I feel it has given me a huge leg up in life. I now realize that I can not control others. I can only control what I choose to do. It cuts down on a lot of frustration to know that I am unable to control anyone else's actions. ( I know this sounds simple but a LOT of people need to understand they can't control others) I am able to give my input and if someone decides to take it fine, if not... it is their issues-not mine.

It has also made me less judgmental of people because I know I am no jewel either. We all have our issues and we all have our past. We can not change the past but we can change the direction of our future. I am no longer ashamed of who I was because it has made me a better person today. I am very open now and I think that gives me the ability to help others. (which I enjoy)

Once, and when I heard the horrendous stories of heartache and they came to me, I stated that, "I felt that everyone in the room should learn to love themselves more." OMG! a honest answer as to my feelings, and I was told you can't say that. Also, that I certainly was being judgmental for a first time visitor.

I left, never went back, knowing that you have to love yourself before you can give or receive love.

Yes. It really gave me insight. For sometimes you think that you have it bad, check out some of the other persons problems. It is good to talk to others as well as listen to others. I found that gave me more patience with myself and more empathy for others.
