The simple answer is as follows.
By truly wanting it and being willing to make sacrifice in order to obtain it.
Though this maybe the simple answer the answer is not simple!
To understand why we must look into the problem.
You have said that this is a question about society, but society is a mass of individuals, so the idea of changing the mass without considering the individual is flawed.
This was the error in practical Marxism which talked about the proletarian mass as a collective but left it opened to be steered by an elite few.
Only when the mass is capable of understanding the true means and workings of social structure, will it be possible to take the first steps towards greater individual control.
As the health of individuals in a society depend on the state of that society, it is also true that the health of that society depends on the state of the individuals living in that society.
these two things are indivisible and the tuned balance will lead to a healthy organism.
Some governments have seen that this is true and have allowed and encouraged free thinking, created welfare and improved education. But this comes at cost to the Oligarchy who must share their power and wealth with the mass in order to make this system tick over.
The Oligarchy or Aristocracy fear losing the positions of privilege in a state where the mass is allowed too much control over their lives, so therefore seek to maintain that control.
Today the old methods of whips and clubs are seen as inefficient and mind control is preferred. When I talk of mind control I am not suggesting that brain washing re-education camps are being secretly used, I am in fact talking about simple employment servitude, consumer dependency and feel good factor!
The employment servitude works in the same way as described by Marx's concept of the army of the unemployed, in which the workers are forced to accept what they are given due to the threat of replacement by others who are waiting to jump into their shoes. In a society where it is just not possible to live without an income and where debt is rife, few have the possibility to stand against the system.
Consumer dependency and Feel good factor go hand in hand, "To be you must have, if you don't have then you are not a thing of worth." Is the message which is propagated by today's marketing strategists.
(remember in this model, money runs up hill and trickles down slowly).
People spend to have and in so feed the beast which enslaves them.
When they have, they believe they are, and 'Feel Good!'.
The fear, felt by the mass, of losing their status belongings is so great that they close their minds to the reality of their servitude and live with the acceptance of control by others.
This phenomena is similar to that of drug addicts, the quick fix is all that matters digging oneself out of the whole is not an important issue if one does not see the whole.
An individual collective where the control over ones own life is only limited by the avoidance of the gaining control over the lives of others can not as yet be truly implemented. In order to obtain this imagined utopia, or better, to realise a better social model, it is first necessary to free the mass of the chains which have been accepted as the price for living in this society.
So to return to the how people can gain more control over their lives instead of living a life serving those in "high places"
The first step is to unchain the minds of as many individuals as possible. (Get them going 'cold turkey' on FGF)
Invest in technology which will allow us to return to our egalitarian origins of pre neolithic revolution. This is not to say that we should go backwards but rather that we should close the circle!
Reorganise and redesign the concept of economy. work around autonomous resources and production.
The teach a man to fish theory.
Educate the mass in the benefits of cooperation over conflictual competition.

Just for clarity I am not suggesting a social revolution as in the French or Russain.
I am only stating our need for a Social Evolution.

People are not by nature independent. the are cooperative and park of packs. In a Macro sence we are part of larger beureacracies that sustain and perpetuate our way of life and without them we would loose all of what we have come to cherrish.
I remember a conversation of mine that was overheard by a platoon sergeant with another young enlisted soldier. i was exiting the army with an honorable discharge as a medic in the ranger regiment and i stated I was tired of being the platoon sergeants ***ch. He responded that he was the ***ch of the letutenant, a person with only college education and nothing more. Actually something that he had as well. But he said that did not end it, the pl was the ***tch of his higher ups and so on. But this hierarchy did not end at a "top." Everyone at every rank had his own zone of influence and even the president of the united states has to be voted in and can only give the ok on decisions congress has made. Each one of those men and women involved had advisors and checks and baances.
Theres a buddhist parable which rambles on about what is the most powerful thing on earth. Starts out with a man, and then the waves that can crush a man are proposed, and then the wind that was believed to push the waves, and then the sun who was the highest, and then the man was proposed becase he could block out the sun with his hand at will, and so went all of existance. Each had a zone of influence, harmonized and comples, with none dominating anything.

As I see it your question deals with 3-entities:
1) Those in "High Places"
2) Middle-management/beuracrats
3) Blue Collar workers/Nuts&Bolts Laborers
_____________________________
Throughout History and even as early as today and the 20th century. Everyone that has been a true leader, from business, to defeating Empires with the political-message they carried. Always started at the bottom and worked their way up to the top.

Ghandi, I believe, to be the most positive example! He was right in there with the nuts & bolts workers picking cotton, that they wouldn't have to depend on other countries, mainly their suppressors, for clothing material, among other things. He gained the people's respect.
And though he taught him the discipline of passive-resistance, their resistance was anything but passive; for by the 'nuts&bolts-laborers' cooperation; they defeated their suppressors, and won the war; without them initiating force; or causing someone's death from their end.
Modern-day miracle, I would say so, but History, records it as a Victory, for Ghandi's-'employees'.

All that to say that people wether working in a factory, restraunt, or construction, all can have the influence of people above them and below them if they are prepared to lose there source of income; for there convictions, whatever those may be.
I realize, for larger or newer families, this is a huge almost, impractical sacrifice at times; but with a little anticipation, and planning ahead; and what I and the guy's at work; call option-plays; or calling an 'audible'....
In other words, always have a back-up plan; when serving someone in "high-places"; wether that be a President; of a Country, Business, etc.; so when the time comes to make a stand; financially speaking, your family won't experience the burdon, it could without planning.
There is a good rule of thumb that says:
1) Always have 3-6 months salary stashed away for an emergency-fund....Do this, and even if you don't see, yourself being fired; You'll have 3-6 month window to figure something else out.
-hope this helps-

Scientists are only confident about what they know about. Alien life is possible - but when found, etc --- knowledge about that life form, etc has to start from zero knowledge. As someone said here - they may not even recognise it as being a lifeform, because it is so alien to us. Water is essential to all life forms here, being dependent upon water in some way. Even insects require water or moisture - I guess (I'm not a biologist, etc etc) and even not directly, they still would indirectly - say need plants, which depend on water.

My dear Kyala C : You are still very young, never loose your self confidence. What leader, leader means Master, Subordinate means Slave, do you really want That.
Beside look at our leaders or Masters, what good are they, they don't worth squat, and this is all you will get with this dirty politics? I bet you if you were in place of GWB , with the help of couple good honest adviser, you would have done much better job, coz you are honest and you are not a thief.
Be independent, be your own master, be free.
My Best Regards.

Such general questions as yours can have no specific answer. What are "the people." Do you include Warren Buffet?
"Gain" is made by exercising one's virtues.
"Their lives" are what? The control they now have over their minds? The use of bus schedules that confine them to time periods? The wives and husbands they marry? What are "their lives"?
"Instead of...." implies that there is an alternative, which you have not demonstrated.
"Serving" in this context means what?
"High places" in this context means what? But I have to tell you, "high places" are good places to see truth from, and in business they usually pay good wages.
So, just what do you mean--specifically?
