The primary protection is that it keeps the government from endorsing one religion and jailing people who want to practice another.
However, the Bill of Rights is the rights of individuals - demanded because the rest of the constitution is the structure of government and its relations with the states and many states would not approve the Constitution without the 10 amendments.
