Everyone who has ever been there knows that the coldest spot on Earth is the bus stop at 5th & Stewart in Seattle.

Humid air is one of the greatest heat thieves known, while dry, still air has insulating qualities near that of a vacuum. Thus, when it is - 15° and calm in dry climes, people really can refer to it as "shirt-sleve" weather.

I live in western Canada and our winters are similar to those of interior Alaska (but a little shorter). We dress in layers, making sure that none of the layers include cotton. Cotton is OK for an urban environment where you're just going from car to store. Humid air feels colder because your clothing can absorb moisture and accelerate heat loss. If you wear non-absorbent, wind-proof clothing, it doesn't matter whether it's humid or dry.

A lot of people have an avoidance philosophy where they just nip from home to car to work. This is the wrong attitude. Enjoy winter.

Alaska is a huge state. The other day the coldest in 1 spot was MINUS 45 and the warmest in another spot was 45. We have lots of climate zones. What area were you thinking of?
