You should call yourself what ever yo want to but you are classified as an American, your parents are from El Salvador, but if they gained citizenship here then too are considered American. Your friend needs to realize that being born in this country makes you American, if she doesn't want to be called an american then she needs to move to another country an gain citizenship there. There is nothing wrong with being an American you should feel proud of that since your parents took a big risk (proabably) to get here and have you born here and I am sure they would prefer you to think of yourself as American, but that doesn't mean you can;t be proud of your heritage and take part in that culture.
By the way in my opinion you can't call yourself salvadorian american because you were never an from El Salvador, you are an American with El Salvadorian decent. I mean I guess that would make me a French Canadian, Scottish, Bohemian, Italian American, that sounds pretty stupid doesn't.
