Those appliances get their energy from an electric power plant. It probably burns gas (most popular but pricey), or heavy oil (cheaper but may require more pollution controls on plant), coal (cheapest and domestic-sourced, but hardest to get pollutants out of), or might be nuclear (low cost and non-polluting but has used-up fuel rods that are radioactive and hard to dispose of).

Coal, gas, nuke. Ask your electric provider and they will tell you what percent of your usage comes from the different fuel.

The fuel is electricity. You pay for it with your electric bill
