Seriously. It's like if you cut yourself people think you are a bad person or insane or something. Even if people don't know and just think that you cut yourself, you are considered crazy and evil and emo and stuff like that. It's not right.

Okay, I'm tired of people saying that it opens you to more infection. BREATHING, WALKING, EVERYTHING YOU DO, make you more prone to infection! Gosh!

People who say to see a therapist or phycologist, I say that doesn't work because I've tried it.

Scarring.
Potential for infection.
Pain.

A normal, healthy person does NOT cut himself/herself. That doesn't mean you are "bad," but it does indicate that you have problems and need help. I hope you get it soon before you land up with something a lot worse than a few scars.

Edit: OK - I'm sorry you don't like to hear about infection, but cutting yourself (especially when you're using something that probably hasn't been properly sterilized on skin that hasn't REMOTELY been properly cleaned) is a HUGE risk of infection as compared to breathing or eating or other normal activities. Skin is literally the largest organ of the human body; when you cut into it, you might as well be cutting into your liver or kidneys or heart. Skin's function is to keep moisture in, and germs OUT. Breach that barrier, and you risk all KINDS of things. There's a lot of bad crap that lives on your skin ALL the time, including resistant bugs. When you open your skin with a razor blade or scalpel or anything else sharp, you're giving the damn things an engraved invitation to take up residence, and that can kill you.

I KNOW what I'm talking about, because I've seen resistant staph. Have you? I've seen it kill within a matter of 24 to 48 hours; have you? Grow the f*ck up, and get some help, but don't whine about it when someone qualified tells you the TRUTH.

For some people therapy, and having to talk dosen't really seem like it would help. I'm sure there are some people that cut because of lonliness and paying someone to listen to them really isn't doing anything good for them. As far as crazy i can see people making that wrong assumption but evil and emo, i think there would have to be some other reason than cutting for being labeled as that, i've known people who cut that don't look or act evil or emo but still cut. Honestly i can't tell you anything that would make cutting truley bad other than it is only temporary relief, the pain is nobody's business but the cutters, and risk of infection? well that's dumb, not every tiny cut in the world has caused an infection. The only thing that's bad is if you cut too deep, but again that dosen't happen to every person every time.

When you cut yourself you are trying to substitute physical pain for psychological pain. It may provide temporary relief for the psychological pain, but it does not address the root of the underlying problem. You would be better off trying to talk about your problems with a friend or if you can afford to, a psychotherapist. Most people have problems and things that bother them. When you cut yourself, you are showing everyone who sees your physical scars that you are dealing with your problems in an ineffective and immature way that doesn't work, and may even lead to infections. There are much better ways to deal with your problems. Try them.

Addition: If you're tired of hearing the truth, then do whatever you want. In the eyes of sane people you look like a fool. Psychotherapy only gives you the tools; you need to do the work. You are giving up too easily or you don't consider your habit a problem so why bother to post a question about it?

Just because someone cuts does not mean they are emo or crazy or anything like that. There are people that cut and are the most nicest sweetest people ever. Dont judge people by what they do. Trust me i know because i do it.... well used to. The only thing about it is that you have scars for the rest of your life that don't ever go away. I did it because i was going thru problems i guess a way to feel that i was hurting others when in reality i was hurting my own self even more. But still don't judge people because of that. But its better to stop it makes you feel better when you stop seeing blood and self destruction to yourself.

Behavior that harms your body is not considered the behavior of a healthy-minded individual. It goes against the natural instinct to protect oneself and avoid pain.

In fact, the cutting is usually an expression of pain and frustration coming out in the wrong way.

Cutting can also lead to infections, life-long scaring and other self destructive actions in the future.

These are all of the reason that people label the behavior and the person exhibiting it.

Here's a supporting question.

Why do we stop people from cutting themselves but we don't stop people from mutilating themselves with plastic surgery?

Think about someone who's basically normal but has one procedure after another. Like the woman who wanted to be a real life Barbie doll. Or in even more extreme cases, people who dislike their body so much that they want sex change surgery.

Whether it is right or wrong is up for discussion I guess, but when you compromise the integrity of you skin, you open yourself up to infection, which isn't good or right.

Cutting yourself is NOT a healthy activity! Think more about why do you do it and ways to stop. Try seeing a therapist.
