I just received a gift check from a friend. But the first name appeared on the check is not my legal name. However, my last name and address are both correct. Does anybody know if I could still cash or deposit it?

It is common for friends to write nicknames on checks and it is not a problem. The correct endorsement on the reverse is to sign the name as it appears on the front, and then underneath, your official signature that you use all the time.

Go ahead and sign it and cash it. As long as it is really legit and was meant to be given to you, there should be no problem depositing it. I have deposited checks into my account with my sister's name on it with no problem. Of course I trusted her that she would not come back and claim I stole the checks that she gave me to deposit. However, if there is any chance the person who wrote it might come back and say it wasn't for you, you should not deposit it. You could get nailed for check fraud. Good luck!

Take the check to YOUR bank. If the name is a variation of your legal name, your middle name, or something similar, you should have no problem. If not, how do I know the check does not belong to your sister-in-law? If you have any trouble, have your friend write a new check.

Your bank will take any check for deposit. They have access to your money if it is returned. As long as it is good you will have no problem.

Try taking your passport with you. My Grandma wrote a check to my mother with her old last name and she could cash that in when she took her passport.
