BMWs are very good cars. They are very gratifying to drive. The mechanical structure and powertrains last forever. When they do have problems, they are expensive to fix and they cost a lot to maintain though.

BMW was a great car until the E36 came down the pike with all kinds of problems. The 2002's E28's and the E30's were the best cars they ever made but now they are nothing but problem cars with HUGE repair bills.Anything in the interior after 1993 falls apart in a hot climate.I just looked at a 6 year old BMW and the whole headliner is falling down like all of the cars I'm looking at.This has been a common problem with BMW's since the e36 came out in 1992 and you would think by now they may have a new headliner!Another problem to look for are the control arms and tie rods which fall apart in 30,000 miles which destroy the rotors and trash the whole front end of the car.Like I say,BMW WAS a great car until they destroyed their own brand with nothing but PROBLEMS!

Hi so here are the facts of life with old BMW cars they need some one with loads of money. a they will need servicing and spares add to this being a prestigious make spares are more expensive than other makes. as are the BMW labour charges. it will also need a BMW dealer to diagnose it's faults with a special BMW diagnostic tester.
so as this car was designed to last 8 years or 100k miles which ever came first beyond which the BMW company would take no responsibility for it going wrong.

4 words which will make this answer simple: """THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE""" from my experience its true, I have driven, Infiniti, Lexus, Acura, Audi, Mercedes, VW, BMW apart from all those BMW was the best. why? because a BMW, especially the 3 series are all cars coming together forming into one perfection. Comfort, reliabilty, fuel efficient, fun to drive and just everything good. BMW really knows how to make proper cars, they always spend constant amount of money making sure their cars are better than their previous ones. if you think 3 series is good, wait till you get into the ///M3, that car is such a street brawler. its an ordinary BMW with an ///M logo that lets everyone know, its not a 3 series, its the best car ever made.

tell the owner to knock a grand off for the maintenece that will be due around 100k. A full tune up on most bmw's will be close to a grand once you add in plugs, coil boots, fuel filter, ect.

as long as you are prepared to maintain this car, it will treat you well. But every time it goes in the shop expect 1000bux and sometimes you will be happy with a small bill.

I hate to see when someone overextends themselves buying a status symbol then can't afford to fix it when it breaks, It will break, all cars do.

good luck

bmw once built solid cars now [like mercedes] they are too gimmicky and the materials are no longer of stellar quality they leak oil and coolant worse than ever, the engine management is finiky to say the least
would i buy a newer bmw no way, however i would happily pay today's "new" price for a zero time 1987-1989 325 w/ 5spd [a real car for real people who know how to drive, fast or slow and when/where to do each]

They're great cars to drive when everything is serviced and maintained but their reliability sucks big time and alot of expensive parts wear out or fail if you drive the car like it was meant to be driven.
