Full scale Micro power generation
(small home and office multiple power generating units which will be connected together to implement the grid and reduce demand of traditional energy sources)

Thus creating autonomous towns and cities which produce their own energy.

It's now only a question of investment!

EVERY HOME SHOULD HAVE ONE
A revolution in small-scale roof-top generators could turn the electricity industry on its head and soon even outstrip that of the world’s nuclear power industry. The attraction of these personal microgenerators is that they are very suited to renewable sources - in the form of wind turbines, photovoltaic panels or water wheels - helping to slash carbon emissions while taking the strain off overloaded distribution grids. Fiber optic internet. (I live in the United States, and I'm particularly bitter about this one. I WANT MY DAMN BANDWIDTH!!)

Aside from that, it's a very long list. One of my favorites is true democracy, where the people make the decisions, rather than electing people to make decisions. With the internet, this one is quite possible. Commercial space travel might go on this list. There are certainly plenty of medical advances that might go here. Solar and wind energy. Fusion power is also quickly approaching this status.

One thing to consider is that often things that are in this state have been done on small scales, but are, for the moment, impractical, inefficient, or expensive. Solar power is an excellent example of that, being all of the above.

"cure for cancer" -- Hell no. Do you realize how much money pharmaceutical companies could make off that one? If it were possible, it'd be out so damn fast your head would fall off.

Gas mileage could easily be improved. (Electric cars, anyone?) The only reason it hasn't been is because congress is unwilling to legislate their big contributors. Car companies would have to pay too much to improve gas mileage. Ahh, it's so refreshing to see American innovation at work...

The first things that come to mind all involve energy efficiency. It is in the best interests of certain rich people for the general population to be less energy efficient.

My favorite technologically possible thing that hasn't happened, though, is a manned mission to Mars. Robert Zubrin's book "The Case for Mars" explains how this is possible. The author is a former NASA engineer.

cars that get over 40 mpg, standard.

it shouldnt even be that hard, I have 1990 p.o.s. celica and I get over 40 per gal, but that is because i coast in neutral... alot and never downshift. If my pos can do it, a brand spankin new car should be able to do it, and whats the deal with hybrids advertising 35 mpg, that is crap, i have a regular car and i get better than that, I'd start advertising at 50 mpg, that would get people outta thier chairs
