Ottawa is obviously the class of the East. Who is the 2nd best team in the East? Are they really better than the teams between 6th and 10th?

Smallz- Only counts if you are not a Philly fan. Don't just name your favorite team people, who is second best?

Tartar- A team that averages less than 2.5 goals per game no less.
His point was how mediocre the Eastern Conference is.

Tartar and LITY- Yeah, I agree BUT there is no doubt in my mind that teams like SJ and Anaheim are REALLY good teams, yet currently in 6th and 7th. Seems almost AFC/NFC to me.

Lubers- With that offence, EVEN WITH BRODEUR, I don't see them as second best to spite them being so right now. I think the Habs are looking good, the NYR will get better, etc.

I hate to say it, but a certain guy named Marty seems to be back on his game! And that makes a certain team SCARY!

The second best team in the East is the NJ Devils. Yes, they are better than the 6th through 10th teams in the East, but not by an extreme amount by any stretch. You are correct, the East is a toss up, but I will be very surprised if anyone manages to take the second spot away from them. Carolina could, but plays in a traditionally weak division and the rest of the teams in the conference are pretty even. I think people forget a little about what NJ had to go through to open the season. I expect them to open it up a little bit from the rest of the division now that they have settled in. Additionally, they should have a slightly lighter load regarding travel since they played so many road games to open the season.

It's a shame about the Sabres (shooting themselves in the foot) they would have been a good running mate for Ottawa.

Things look to be setting up for the Pens to make a deep playoff run come Spring but your absolutely right currently, NJ and Carolina 2 and 3 are not that much better then the Bruins or Islanders. Is Brouder really just a regular season tiger now

I'm not sold on Ottawa going back to the Finals ( True, it's still December) but who's really the #1 goalie and the pressure from Canada to win a cup. Should be an unpredictable playoffs in the East as opposed to the West where it will be a coin flip between The Ducks and Wings, there might be some other sexy picks in the West but in a7 game series against either of those team they will fold like a book

I think all things being equal, that the second best team in the East is no better than the 10th or 12th.

I think you are seeing a similar even happening in the west.

It has come to the point where if you want to make the playoffs, you have to win your division, and the rest of the conference is a crapshoot. Just as Buffalo has had a winning streak to vault them into the playoffs from being dead last on November 22nd, the Philadelphia Flyers have the same streak going in the opposite direction.

Atlanta's 13th over all in the East.....4 points from being 3rd overall in the conference.

Calgary goes 11 games without a regulation loss and moved from being mowhere to a playoff position.

It's going to be an interesting year...............but still...........no room at the playoff table for the Leafs

I'd say no-one is clear 'no. 2' right now. No's 2 thru 13 are too close to call right now, and even the Caps and Lighting could catch up pretty easily to the rest of the pack. Reminds me of the Patrick division of the late 80's.

I would have thought at the start of the year the Rangers would be much better right now, but their lack of 'O' is surprising to me. Honestly, I dont even have a hunch as to how this canference will actually finish up. Probably will take a math professor to calculate all the tie breakers.

Tomato - tomato

Is it mediocre or a bunch of teams that are fairly evenly matched beating the hell out of one another?

Top seeds don't win the cup that often.
Goalie's steal cups.
A winner needs grit and balance as well as skill.

Ranger's have better balance than the Sens. They may also have better number one goalie.
Flyer's have better balance, grit and a better number one goalie.
Jersey has a better goalie than the Sens too.

Let the Wings and Sens knock themselves out getting the number one seeds. History shows the number one seed often falls in the 4 round playoffs.
Hodge may be right, but what does it matter in December?

Ottawa are the best at the moment and the rest are close together, so it's not really possible to choose a definite second best
