i traded my quad for this bike thinking it was a 2003, it was stolen at one point and had the vin scratched off, it was recovered in an auction and sold. I am getting papers for it soon but i dont know what the vin is!! i asked people on forums and compared bikes and have come to the conclusion that its a 2000 model, is there any other place for a vin# on the bike??? on the engine somewere? can i have a new one made?

When you get your paper work you have to go to state title office(for automobiles) and they will make sure the paper work is correct and they will issue a new vin for you. For right now take the seat, exhaust or anything and find any kind of number, If it is a stock part number call a suzuki dealer and ask them what year it is(that will narrow it down) or you can take it to the dealer and they can hunt down a number on it.

Good Luck

the only other hope is the engine number, prob. near the gear pedal or on a panel of the central crank cases near the rear of the cylinder. If motor has been swapped, or engine number changed/destroyed this may prove useless. check shape and colours, std exhaust will have a number stamped on it-this will identify the model-perhaps you will NOT be able to buy a new identity plate, except a used one, which will be wrong, and perhaps illegal. as an ex-stolen bike, expect it's been absolutely t(h)rashed.

There would be one clearly visible on the frame (I assume that's the one that was scratched off), but there is always a second one stamped into the steering neck. See if that one is still there.

If the one on the steering neck has been scratched off too, here's a way to recover it:

1) polish the area to a mittor finish with a dremel (you'll need the felt wheel and some jewler's rouge),

2) brush on some mag wheel cleaner or other strong acid, making sure to cover the entire vin,
keep brushing it on so it doesn't dry until the number re-appears. This may take several hours, the stronger the acid, the shorter the time.

3) The vin number will be obscure, but readable. They will be slightly raised above the rest of the metal. If you have trouble reading it, use a sheet of paper and a crayon to make a rubbing.

When letters are stamped into the metal, it compressed the metal under the letters. This makes it harder for the acid to eat this part away. The surrounding metal gets eaten away , while the letters slowly start to appear. This is how serial numbers are recovered on firearms, it actually does work.

Contact a dealer that sells those kinds of bikes, and ask them that question. If there is more than one place on the bike for the V.I.N. (Which I Imagine there would be), They can tell you where they all are.

I had a 99 and I think it was on the side and front of the frame near the forks, the frame was a grey color too, there should be something stamped there?
