He started with an amount of money that we'll call x. That means that after October, he had 2x - 3000. After November, he has 3*(2x - 3000) - 5400. After December, he had 4*(3*(2x - 3000) - 5400) - 7200. Set that equal to 4800 and solve for x, and then use the value for x to show exactly what happened each month and to determine if 4800 is greater than or less than x.

Working backwards:

4800+7200 = 12000 .

12000/4 = 3000

3000 + 5400 = 8400

8400 / 3 = 2800

2800 + 3000 = 5800

5800/2 = 2900

He started with $2900.

4800 - 2900 = 1900
He gained $1900 during the holiday season.

I can't really say if his wife thought that was good or not -- most people would think it wasn't enough!

that's it! :)
