I disagree, and feel that ANY band surpasses Metallica

I ask you this: who _cannot_ rock out to Battery or Ride The Lightning when they hear it on the radio?
I cannot quite agree with you. For one thing, rock is such a broad genre and there are so many bands worthy of respect, like Disarmonia Mundi and Withersoul. Also, as someone else pointed out, the classics, like Led Zeppelin and Rush, are also strong contenders for the greatest rock musicians. Also, I dislike the direction Metallica has taken with their last several albums (though I have high hopes for the next one). Still, despite this, I would contest anyone who would deny that the old Metallica is the some of the best metal to have been produced.

well first you need to get your categories straight. Metallica is not rock. They are thrash metal. That would be asking a totally different question. I think that Metallica is a great group. They are not the best. I wouldn't put anybody at the moment as the best. It is to hard to narrow it down. There was a time where metallica was on top of the world. In the 90's I would have to say. They are pretty much the kings of thrash metal. BUT, That time has passed and I personaly don't like there new material. I don't think that they surpass many people now though.

No, I'm sorry. Metallica is a good metal-rock, but when it comes to real rock'n'roll...it's hard to beat Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink FLoyd, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beatles, and Jefferson airplane.

You've got to be kidding me. While Metallica has good songs, and albums, they also have crap songs and albums, whereas there are certain bands that continually have great albums. I don't think Metallic will ever be as big as they were at their peak, so currently, no, there are not the best band, not even in the top five, and there are countless other bands with better legacies and greater songs than Metallic.

Metallica isn't rock. It's Metal (Thrash). And it depends which albums. The new ones suck. I gotta say, Iron Maiden surpasses them. Although Iron Maiden is metal, but so is Metallica.

at one time i would have said yes to this question, and i DO still like metallica, but ever since the whole "getting pissed off at free downloading" i've been turned against them. if you are a true musician, it should be about getting your music out there, not just making money....they are rich and yet only care about getting richer.
