There are many species on this planet that we have yet to capture and study. The rods have been caught on camera on many occasions. It's possible that they are some kind of insect life we haven't studied yet.

Most on film are small flying insects.
If they do physically in our reality, some collector would have them pinned up like butterflies by now.
This then raises another question - if they don't exist physically in our reality - what are they?
