What crime have all those imprisioned animals commited?
I say, PROFIT is the only reason for the existence of Zoos or Aquariums.
Human cruelty place us below all other forms of life.

i don't think zoos are good for animals b/c "they live there longer"--what kind of a life is that? would you like to be put in a cage, be fed three times a day, cleaned, and taken care of if that'd enable you to live 20 years longer? animals should live in their natural habitat--they should learn to use their instincts, breath the fresh air, run, hunt, etc. i don't believe in these artificial habitats created in the zoos. they're way too small and imagine yourself behind bars being watched by hundreds of people thinking how lovely you are--and in the meantime you're a captive, away from your natural habitat.

instead of keeping the animals in zoos to protect them, why not keep the hunters away from the wilderness, this way animals can still live a long life, and free and happy.

i couldn't agree more. i was actually going post a question similair to yours.

if it were the other way around and humans were in cages for animals to look at and feed, we'd be trying to escape and harm the animals too (for putting us there in the first place i mean.) it's quite pathetic and ignorant, the idea of zoos. and you're probably right about the whole profit thing. i don't even want to know how much money zoos make. if we added up all of the profit that every zoo in the world made, it would probably be billions of dollars.

the recent incident with the siberian tiger escaping and attacking 3 humans is now under suspicion that humans let her out. most say a tiger could not jump the 20 wall in her cage. even if she did, it's still not a good idea to have a freakin' tiger in the same place as children. i mean, you wouldn't have a tiger for a pet if you had kids, would you? how would you explain that one? "i don't understand how larry could've attacked my kids." um i do. BECAUSE IT'S A F***ING TIGER!!!! jeez people, really. they are naturally aggressive animals, it's in their genes. reminds me of an episode of a cartoon i like where they train a lion to be a vegetarian, then they show the lion and it's skin and bones. then it coughs. it just has this "please help me!" look on it's face.

we cannot expect to "harvest" animals and have them change and be "friendly with no cause for concern". there's always a risk.

Close zoos and I absolutely garuntee animals such as tigers and pandas will be extinct within 20 years, probably within 10. Zoos are absolutely the last hope for such animals.

Besides, they get fed and nowadays they have lots of room. They get vetinary care and a pretty much garunteed mate. I'd say they've got it pretty sweet. Profit is a very big reason why zoos exist - but also for education, research and conserving of endangered species.

Yes human cruelty does prove we are nowhere near as good as we think we are.

Yes, basically the poor animals are just wasting away in cells.
Some zoo's are better then others but I don't think any animal can be happy locked up all of their lives.
