I agree, a robot however is not a person, it lacks what you might call a soul, therefore it can only do what it is programmed to do, still we have our fear.
I would not want a robot, don't take away from me that which gives my life meaning, robots/computers are making us all mentaly disabled, we need to know its limits, set limits, avoid venturing beyond...

I assume you're talking about a "human shaped computer" type of thing, that walks, talks and such, right? ^_^
Sure, I'd own one, why not? I hate doing dishes. ^_^
And as far as trying to take over the world, here's a hint:
That sort of thing won't happen for decades if not centuries. The thing of it is, the robot's *brain* is going to be a computer. A computer needs an operating system, and programs to run with it. A computer *cannot*, by and large, do anything by itself that isn't in its operating system or programming. Even with viruses and worms, *they are programs too*. Granted, they are the kinds of things other people *sneak in* because they suck and do destructive, annoying things...but still.
Point is, if the code isn't there, it won't happen. And for the time being, *people* are the ones writing the code. That's the thing right there....current robots (of the human-shaped sort) need to be protected *from us*, not the other way around. We need to make sure that robots don't get worms, viruses, or *bad designs* that might make them a threat to society, because the tech is primitive enough now that *we* would be the only ones responsible if things go wrong.
But like I said....in a few decades, some people will make good on their attempts to take the whole idea of "machines programming machines" out of the lab. *That* is where things can get gnarly. Search the site below for the *whole phrases* "computer programs" and also "Darwinian competition".
http://www.sciam.com/
The point of it is that in the labs, right now, some computer scientists are experimenting on writing programs that not only solve problems, but that do it in parallel (multiple programs running at once) *and Competitively* (using a "survival of the fittest" protocol).
If *anything* ever has the potential to go wrong after the manner of your science-fiction movies, this would be it: Letting computers write the code and programs for other computers *based on* survival of the fittest. Simply put, it would be too easy to let the machines decide "what is fit?" for any given purpose.
Once that happens, your "take over the world" scenario is possible. Still, we are talking about something that might happen decades down the road at the soonest. The robots that are out there now (Roombas, RoboSapiens, or even the more advanced stuff out of Japan) are just too primitive on the computational level to be a threat.
I hope this helps. ^_^ Good Question!

(just like machines has been replaced since the 40's in work fields

I would love to have a robot. And not just one. They could do my work for me, serve me, and so on.

No, I don't believe I would want one.
Don't get me wrong...I have nothing against technology (obviously...lol) but I fight every day to keep alive the "homey" arts...the ones that take time, creativity, desire to accomplish. Robots, for me, would be giving in to forgetting, giving up.......
Thanks, but no thanks.
