This whole wild tiger thing really has me freaked out. All my friends are saying that it has something to do with a mutated gene in cat species. I don't wanna sound like a baby but if I go to the zoo or a friends house who has cats/tigers, what can i do to be safe? Thanks

Don't dangle your legs into their enclosure and taunt them. That's what got the other three maniacs attacked.

Don't worry, I doubt there is a mutated gene in the big cat species that would make them attack. The fences at the particular zoo where the attack took place were only 12.6 feet tall and tigers can jump up to sixteen feet that is probably how it got out, if you are visiting a zoo with tigers it is highly HIGHLY unlikely you will ever be harmed by any animal. The most attacks on humans at zoos are to the keepers not the visitors. This was a freak accident and the visitors safety is the number one thing on the zoos mind.

Hope this helps.

I don't know where your friends got the mutated gene thing from, but they are way off base on that.

First things first, don't taunt the tigers. Tigers are wild and dangerous animals and should be treated with respect at all times - taunting an animal is not only stupid, but disrespectful. (How do you like being taunted?)

Secondly, I would say that you are safe in any AZA-accredited zoo if you don't taunt the animals ( I know, I know, the SF zoo was accredited; but I am highly suspicious about the visitors' actions on that day).

Third - what kind of friends do you have with big cats/tigers??? I would not trust anyone to have those animals unless they were fully licensed or accredited. Anyone owning a tiger or other big cat as a pet (actually, any large exotic) without any sort of license is just asking to get hurt, in my opinion. Stay away, far away...

Just because you take a wild animal out of the wild doesn't mean that it's safe. Ask ANY zookeeper - even the ones that work with "harmless" ones like deer.

first of all , if you're at the zoo, you probably won't get attacked, but don't be an idiot like the other 3 that got attacked and don't tease the animals. Obviously they don't have any common sense, and i don't know where they got the mutated genes thing, but i really dont think it's true. And don't go to your friends houses if they have tigers cause:
1. thast dangerous, and just plain asking for trouble
2. they shouldn't have a tiger in the first place; tigers belong in the wild.

You should be concerned about the dogs running around your neighborhood. There are more injuries and deaths in America from the domestic dog than any other animal.

The only mutated gene would be the ones in your friends brains for making such an ignorant statement.

Hun, this event was a freak occurance and I can gaurantee every zoo in the nation has tekn notice and is checking and rechecking thier enclosures for safety. As for protectingyourself, just follow the rules (i.e. do not go past the fences if they tell you not to go past the fences). Otherwise I wouldnt be so concerned. :)

Paranoid! I have been going to the zoo since I was small and there were no dangerous animal escape sin that whole time. Just make sure you don't taunt the big tigers or bears Oh My! So ya when you go there make sure you don't tease and if you see someone teasing tell them to stop. Don't be paranoid because this stuff happens to not very smart people. Just keep on going to the zoo without thinking about it! All tigers are very aggressive. mutated gene! Their wild animals not house cats! Keep going to the zoo because it is not the fault of the zoo! The zoo has these animals so that the public can get a look at them and plus the siberian tiger is endangered.

What ARE you talking about? What does a mutated gene have to do with anything?! Your friends keep tigers as pets?

It is very simple to protect yourself from any carnivore in the zoo. Don't piss the animal off. Don't taunt it. Don't throw stuff at it. Don't yell at it. Don't dump things into its enclosure. Don't stick any part of your body into its enclosure. Don't try to enter its enclosure. Behave yourself. Respect the animals. You'll be fine.

Um, not much you can do, sorry to say, perhaps take some Martial arts classes. Can't say those will help you either but it would be better then doing nothing.
But I agree with the people above, its highly unlikely that they will get out. So i wouldnt worry about it (just like plane crashes it happens but its the rare miniorty).

Don't aggravate the tigers & taunt them like the 3 idiots did.
