Depending on the state where you play, there are benefits above winning to playing the lottery. Proceeds are given to government programs for the elderly in some states, other states fund education initiatives.
As far as winning is concerned, it seems that you stand a better chance if you go in as a group - such as a pool of tickets at work, etc. Larger numbers increase the odds.
A tax on the poor at math - not to me. Then again, I have no luck so I don't play. Yet, for some damn reason, I still have to pay taxes. I don't know how my tax dollars benefit me, since the government has done nothing but hamper my life these past few years.

I've always said that the lottery is a stupid tax for those that can't do math. You hit that one right on. But there's a one in two billion chance that I may be wrong.

That is a good way to put it! It could be. I think if the average person actually knew what the true odds were, they would probably never play it. The only consolatioin is that some of the proceeds help education. It is a huge business employing thousands of people nationwide. I wonder what percentage of the actual profits go to education.

not only is it a "tax", but when you pay it, you CANNOT deduct it against income, like most other taxes. And what's even worse, when you win, you PAY TAXES on the tax already paid.
