Just plug in a = 23,000 and solve:

temp. change = -5.5(23000 / 1000)
= -5.5 x 23
= -126.5 degrees

b is the correct answer.

23000 is a

23000/1000 = 23

-5.5 X 23= -126.5

a = 23000 feet so you fill that in and get
-5.5 (23000/1000) change of temperature and thats
-5.5 x 23 = -126.5 degrees

We have a flaw here. This formula is not correct. I am a former airline pilot. The normal drop off in temperature is considered to be 3 degrees per thousand, not 5.5 degrees. That said at 23,000 ft agl at standard pressue the temperature would have dropped 69 degrees.

just plug in 23000 for a, because there is an increase of 23000ft for altitude.

23000/10000=23(-5.5)=-126.5
