Before the industrial revolution the peasant class were needed in rural areas to do the work that would be taken over by the machines. Introduction of mechanisation meant that these jobs disappeared. At the same time it meant more jobs were available in urban areas to work in factories etc. It also meant a greater demand for coal.
Cities grew and so did the number of urban poor.
