I go to thrift stores, too. I should go to the library more but I never seem to remember to return them! Where I used to live, there were stores called Half-Price Books which had a lot of very good over-run stock or trades in books. I am actually lucky enough to have a job where we are paid for two hours a week of reading. I do historical indexing, so it has to be something related to what we are currently working on.

I use the library a lot, as I read for Vision Australia there reading newspapers for the print disabled so I get Rolls Royce service from all the librarians who are eager to get books in from other libraries if I want to read them. I often pick up books from the hospital where my husband goes for therapy.
Sometimes I will hear part of a book reading on the radio, I love to listen to Radio National as I work. When I hear an interesting reading I may buy the book if I enjoy the book I will give it to a friend as a gift, if it is really meaningful to me I will keep it ( Steven Covey, Share market books etc) When I could not get a popular book from the library ( The Da Vinci Code) I bought it from a bookstore but I was disappointed so donated it to the library that would reduce the waiting lists on that (I think silly) book( I was expecting something like King Solomon's Mines) In any case books I buy from the bookstore which I have not enjoyed get donated to the library.
I don't usually like it when people give me books as they usually don't give me books I enjoy, I would much prefer they lent them to me because I don't like t many books hanging around.
Sometimes I will buy from second hand stores but not often I seem to get plenty of books from other sources. Often I do a swap when I stay at Timeshare resorts taking books and swapping them .
I usually buy about 8 to 10 books a year from book stores and read about 3 books a week.

Amazon Marketplace (where people go to sell used books) or Half.com or ebay. Almost never pay full price. Thrift stores too, but harder to find what I want. I just bought a novel Wally recommended for 1 penny on Amazon. When I am finished I will pass it on or donate it.

Ebay, Barnes & Noble, Borders, used book stores. If the library has something interesting on their sale shelf I might buy one. Our little town has an old, well established second hand book store on Main Street and sometimes I find something of interest.

When I lived in the city, I tried to purchase a majority of my books from locally owned bookstores. Now, I live in the country, a couple of hours from the nearest good bookstore, so I normally go through Book Finder (http://www.bookfinder.com/) which searches several book selling sites, allowing you to specify if you want new or used books, and also allowing you to search for first editions or books that have been signed by the author. I've been able to find a majority of the books that I want for less than $5, shipping and all.

I get mine in a variety of places; Hastings book store, B Dalton, Books a Million, Amazon.com, garage sales, flea markets, Good will, the Salvation Army, DAV and the used book stores here in my area. I also trade books with friends a lot. I have a LOT of books and read constantly.

Used or out of print books I look for on line. I love to order from Powells Book store in Portland OR. If they don't have it, no one does. For new books I use the public library. For keepers and reference books, it's usually Barnes and Noble.

I'm cheap, cheap, cheap. I buy my books at flea markets and garage sales, Half Price Books, and the Village Book Store in Columbus.

I often buy my books at second-hand shops (stores for used books -- there are many in my area), or at lawn sales, thrift shops, rummage sales, etc.
