This is just a little poem of mine that I shared with someone on R&S today, but I thought I'd share it with you too. So what do you think? Basically, it talks about my struggle while I was trying to come to terms with the fact that there is no god.

Don't be too hard me on now, remember that Poppy is not a native English speaker :-)

The Seal

It could have been a consolation prize for the inconsolable;
the ones who will always ask “what if ...?”
A personal, private corner of hell hanging on a hook of a question mark,
seeing everything upside down, everybody against you, slowly going mad.

As candle burns slowly, memories are everything that’s left,
but they are not everything.
Spelling out the end in many ways as the sharp metal rips the skin
to instill the pain where love has never been.

Between being invisible and visibly misunderstood,
I find the choice is made for me - another corner in hell…

And then came the liberating, overwhelming sense of freedom.
My choices. My way. My happiness. My serenity. And no selfishness!
And the sadness to come, and the love to come,
and the unknown fears that are yet to take it all away,
and the familiar feelings that will stay.

This life I'm seizing before the seal steals my time away.

Glad you liked it folks! :)

Gary7, I meant seal as an engraved or inscribed stamp.

I think it's beautifully written, and I definitely felt the emotion. Very nice spare use of words. But I'm not sure I'm getting the allusion to "the seal." I'm thinking of a seal as in the sea creature. ;) Probably not the imagery you intended to evoke, I'm guessing. Is there a line you could slip in somewhere to help the reader identify what "the seal" is?

""Wow", you can write like that thinking their is no God, "Umm", imagine what you can do when you find out "Their is one". Good luck."

Boo, hiss. Poppy was a Muslim before she became an atheist. Please don't be arrogant enough to assume that people who don't presently believe in God never did believe in God. Most of us were members of some religion or other before we became atheists.

And there is plenty of talent among atheists, too. We don't need divine inspiration to create beautiful things, as Poppy proves.

Awesome!!

I wish I could write like that.

Your English is better than most people on here who are native speakers.

Something I noticed while traveling extensively through Eastern Europe was the incredible grasp of language that a lot of the young locals had. (Friends of mine in Slovakia speak 5 languages fluently!)

Rock on!
