Why is it that people cry over things that don't play any real role in there life. Say the president were to be shot thousands of people would cry over this situation even though they don't know him some people might not even like him but they'll still cry over him why is that? I mean I remember when 9/11 happened I know a lot of people that cried over that mostly women but some men too but not one of them had anything to do with 9/11 none of there family were were involved they didn't know a single person that was hurt or would of been affected by 9/11 but yet they cry there eyes out like there father or someone else they care deeply about died when it happened. Most of the people I knew back then had never even been to new york. Why do people cry and mourn over these things that play no roll in there life what so ever?

There's a difference between having compassion and being a baby I mean honestly on average there's 150k people that die a day all over the world why not sit there and cry over each and every one of them? why is one persons life that you don't know or care about worth more than anothers why cry over one and not the other when you don't know either?

some of you are saying you cried over 9/11 and one of you said that's a bad example because that does effect people well can you do me a favor tell me how that effected you? Unless you know someone that died in 9/11 which I can then understand tell me how if effected you because although it's sad and shouldn't of happened this didn't no effect a single thing in my life not one single thing so before one of you tell me again that's something to cry over tell me why? I mean as I said the average is 150,000 people die a day about 3000 died in the 9/11 attack that's like what 1.5 percent of the average amount that die a day why are all the other people day died that day not worth crying over?

I do understand 9/11 because so many people died and it was sad. Sometimes I don't get why people get so sad over some things, but a lot of it is sad. It depends on the person, some people are more sensitive and care a lot more about everything in the world more than others do. Caring too much doesn't make you a bad person and not caring a whole lot doesn't make you bad either. Just hopefully you care about the things that do effect you.

Maybe empathy --the ability to recognize, perceive and feel directly the emotion of another.

In your example of 9/11--maybe it's because they see what evil people are capable of, and it's sad. Maybe it's the 'last straw' to release pent up sadness. Maybe it's over-emotionality. Maybe it's anger and hatred coming out in a 'socially acceptable' way.

I agree that it seems odd to those who are not like this-personally I was fascinated in the psychology of the event-how could this seem like the right thing to do--but it's not wrong. It did have an effect in Americans' lives-look at the changes that occured-airline protocol, security, etc etc. These aren't emotional, but are effects.

there is a condition called "survior guilt " people get very sad over tragedy that has not occured to them but feel very bad when it happens to someone else. this usually occurs when the person who is sad, has a very productive and joyful life. you feel awful for the person who is in trouble, wish you could help them feel better but really dont know what to do. 9-11 was a tragic event and a lot of people suffer from post tramatic stress disorder. they cant get the awful images out of thier head look around to all they have and wonder why these people now have nothing

Those are 2 horrible examples. Those are 2 things that do effect people. You should have mentioned maybe something about an actor or something getting in trouble for a DUI. Some celebrity getting a divorce after 6 months of marriage.

That is something I would like to know. I will say it is completely understandable to cry over a movie or book due to it happening to me recently while reading.

i can understand why people cry over things like 9/11, or the people of pakistan being so upset over benazir bhutto's death. what i DON'T understand is when people get so up in arms about what britney and jamie lynn spears are doing, or what ugly clothes paris hilton wore last night, blah blah blah. stuff like that really blows my mind because it has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with anyone AT ALL. i think if people spent more time focusing on themselves, how to make themselves better people, or how to raise their OWN kids instead of worrying about what all these so-called "role models" are doing, the world would be a much much better place.

Sympathy.
I don't know any victims of 9-11 personally. But as the events of that day were televised, I shed MANY tears.
When the towers fell, the only thing I thought of was all the people suffering inside, all the rescue workers dying trying to save them, and all of their families, on cell phones or watching TV, knowing first hand how they died.
You don't have to know someone personally to have compassion.

well its that they have a lot of sympathy... i myself mite need to have a little bit more of it... but more to the point is that sympathy is felling bad for someone even though you are basically out of the picture. its natural.
