If you were in charge of hiring employees? Say you had two applicants, a male and a female, that had nearly identical resumes and good interviews/personalities and you like them both. You know either one would be a good employee, but you have to make a decision.

Would you lean a little towards your own gender? Or even against it?

Depends on the size of the business. If it was big enough that I could afford to pay for a temp to cover maternity leave then it would come down to who would fit into my team the best. If I couldn't really afford all the costs that go with a pregnant employee then women under 45 probably wouldn't get a look-in.

Sexist yes, practical yes.

i have held quite a number of boss positions already and never have i considered an applicant for employment solely on the basis of his or her gender..it all depends on the job description...will the prospective employee be running errands or do heavy physical stuff, in which case a male applicant would be the better deal..or will the prospect be performing clerical/routine/sitdown stuff in which case a female applicant would be most preferred..

Where the job being sought demands a higher level of intellectual, emotional and inter-personal skills, there is more reason to disregard the gender factor..Fact is, these requirements have little to do with gender at all.

My three cents thought on your question: do more tests on the applicants, especially ones which expose them to the realistic environment of the job they are vying for and test their character as well ..im sure there will be minute differences between them..Remember, applicants put forth their best foot forward when they approach a personnel guy..When all things seem equal, what the employer could be more interested in is how they'd fare when they' re standing with the other foot...This could spell the difference between the men and the boys..

Good luck!

Depend on the job. If it involves lifting and the female is built well and the male is a little skinny guy I would hire the female. If it is clerical in nature the female because women are much more (don't know what I want to say) Have more dexterity than males.

If they were equally qualified I would pick the one who would bring the added bonus like being more humorous than the other or being a quicker thinker. No one is ever exactly equal to another so I would look for a quality that one has that the other does not.

It would depend on whether I liked the person, could see a good future. To be honest, I may be inclined to hire the woman because from history women have faced a lot of problems in the workplace, so they deserve a chance.

If I had a shortage of one gender in the company, it would become a factor, but that would be a last resort. I would continue to search for one thing that makes one candidate better than the other first.

Who ever fits in better in the group. There is never a 100% same everything in 2 hiring someone. Maybe the same back ground, but never personalities.

ummmmm, it depends on the job... also depends on how many males and females there were...but honestly, i think i'd be slightly more inclined to hire the woman, i don't know why.

for most people though, i think sexual attraction would play more of a role than gender. so for a lot of guys, as long as the woman is somewhat attractive, which is usually the case since your average woman is attractive, they would hire the woman. and for women, if the guy is attractive, which is usually not the case since your average guy is not attractive, they would hire the man. however, i've learned the hard way not to be shallow, so i'd force myself to avoid this tendency.

If they are both equally qualified and gender is the only difference (rarely the case....but OK).

I may lean towards hiring the female due to the natural bonding and subconscious desire to help more women excel, but I also lean towards the male due to the challenging environment for a lot females in my field and not wanting to take risks...so I think my bias would even out at the end.
