In the rear due to the space needed up front and for better protection. Look at the back of a tank and you will see the big grills (like that of the ones you see on the front of ordinary vehicles) for cooling the engine.

Most Tanks like the M1-a2SEP have there engines are in the rear of the tank. The M1 uses the same engine as the Apache and the black hawk.
From front to back

Gunner
Track Commander
to the side of the track commander is the loader.
You go from driver to loader to gunner to TC once you make E-5 I believe.

If you mean main battle tank, it's usually to the rear, behind the turret. If you look closely, you'll see the exhaust and cooling fans there, usually.
