Where you move depends a lot on where your job is. Highway 40/64 is closing for a year so there will be a lot of gridlock. If you are looking into the north county Hazelwood and Florissant are good areas. In the west, Chesterfield , Clayton and Ballwin. In the South, Fenton and Oakville. If you like a more "inner ring" suburb try University City, Maplewood or Afton. All of the nice apartments in the county run between $800 and $1000 a month. Don't count out the city as a good place to live and visit. If you use common sense and avoid the high crime ghettos you will find that a lot of the best clubs and restaurants and local sites are located there. South city especially St. Louis Hills, Lindenwood Park and Dog town have really nice older apartments for $650-$800 in very safe neighborhoods. Check out Craig's List or the classified in the Post Dispatch. Before you rent any apartment I would suggest that you drive around the neighborhood on a Friday night or Saturday afternoon to see what the street scene is like. The local police will happily give you the crime stats for that block. Welcome to St.Louis.

You could find a decent place for less than $1000/month. It can vary, though.

Here's a 1 bed, 1 bath place for $425 in St. Charles, but I can't tell you anymore than the add does .

And here's a unique 2 bed-1 bath for $545 in Overland

Florissant - 2 bed-1 bath $700/month

Anywhere, there's some but I'm sure you can find more. There were other apartments listed on that site, but I just listed the ones with pictures.

And inside the city most areas are safe. Downtown has some beautiful new lofts. St. Louis is dangerous in some parts, just keep an eye out and use common sense.

Most people I know who live there or visit often don't worry about it. If an area looks rundown, avoid it.

Anyway, both the city and the county are beautiful and, for the most part, safe. Congrats on moving to St. Louis and I hope it goes smoothly for you.

She is RIGHT about being robbed in the city! I lived in South City for over 20yrs and my family has been robbed 5 times!

My mom refuses to move. But I moved as soon as my child was born. The school system in the city SUCKS~! If you have children I would AVOID the city at all costs...

I have lived in the Westport area and it was around $500. We moved to Fenton in 2004 and our rent is $630 for a 2 bedroom in a nice quiet complex....

I know there are some rentals in the country from $350 but those are very small one bedroom.

I guess you need to look at all your options and decide what you are looking for most.

haha--robbed and murdered.
that's just a stereotype--NOT.

seriously, though, i've spent considerable amount of time in stl & was never robbed, mugged, raped or murdered. just avoid the bad areas (north, east, and parts of downtown near the projects). and be smart: travel in groups; be sober and aware. drive a reliable car. don't drive in east stl after dark...or, well, ever.

the downtown state streets have fabulous revitalized brick homes. careful, though. do some research.

some GREAT places to live in the county are:
clayton, ballwin, manchester, chesterfield, webster, parts of the loop, fenton & pacific & eureka.

expect to pay at least $800 for a nice 1-bedroom. my friends and i had a 3-br for $895 a few years back.
