I am sure that you are referring to animals but we know that the term 'pet' is often affectionately applied to humans. I suppose that when I was a child, I was 'mommy's little pet' but unfortunately that is not what my mother actually used as my 'pet name'. Until I was about seven, I was convinced that my real name was 'You'reintheway!" The exclamation mark is a necessary part of the name. It had no psychologicaaal eefffect on me and I grew up to give a cat the perfectly normal name of 'Pushkas'. (He was a famous footballer). My logic was that the cat was useless at football and I had no interest in it.

I knew a girl with a dog named Denise Margarite. She always called the dog by it's full name and when I asked her why she gave her dog such a peculiar name, she said the dog looked like her highschool gym teacher so she named her as such.
