Probably to get the points, I imagine. I've seen people answer with "Thanks for the two points!"
Very annoying, isn't it?

People answer for the points, even if they don't know. However it is a violation of Yahoo answers to give the answer "IDK" or " I don't know". It is also a violation of Yahoo Answers to answer with only dots or nonsense. It does not always get reported but it can be and people should be aware it is a violation of Yahoo Answers rules to do these things.
Best bet... If someone doesn't know the answer, Don't Answer! If you want others to look at the question to help the asker get more answers.... star it. Then everyone on your contacts list will see it if they come online which will increase the probability that it will be answered by someone who knows.

Many do it just for the points. I try to answer only those questions that I think I can help or know the answer to.

because when ur done answering it says ur on a roll, keep going, so we feel very motivated to do it even if we don't know the answers lol

sometimes they atleast attempt to answer your question, but most of us do it for the points
